Rating: - * I've used the Makita UC4000 for two years and haven't had a single problem with it. Of course, it isn't as powerful as a comparably priced gas chainsaw, but if you're even considering buying an electric, you probably have a reason to do so. Here are mine: - It's environmentally friendly and you don't end up smelling of gasoline. - No yanking the starter cord five times before the darn thing will run. - Virtually maintenance free. No spark plugs or air filters to replace. - Never runs out of gas. - Constant torque. Doesn't stall as easily as gas saws. - Lighter than a gas saw; 9 lbs versus 12 lbs for many gas saws. On that last point, your arms and back will thank you, especially if you're limbing trees for extended periods of time. At 13 amps, the Makita UC4000 is in the high-powered end of the electric chainsaw spectrum, and in my judgment offers a higher power to weight ratio than most gas saws. The number one feature that makes the UC4000 stand out among other electrics is the slip clutch, which protects the electric motor from rapid deceleration damage if the chain does stall. In my opinion, this is a must-have feature if you want your saw to last. There are disadvantages with electric chainsaws as well, of course. Personally, I don't find the power difference from gas chainsaws that important. The Makita will take down 20+ inch shaggy bark junipers, which are notoriously tough, with no problems. The only real annoyance is the power cord: - Your radius of operation is limited by your extension cord. - You have to lay out the cord to wherever you're working. - It may get caught on brush, rocks, and other protrusions. - It easily gets tangled in branches you've cut. - If you're not careful, you might accidentally cut it. Needless to say, you have to know where your cord is at all times. However, this may prove to be a safety benefit, since you're forced to orient yourself often and thus less likely to trip over timber in a cluttered work area. The bottom line is that the Makita UC4000 is a great buy if you're looking for an electric chainsaw to maintain a small piece of land or larger yard. It is well worth the price. If money isn't an issue, however, you might want to check out the Stihl MSE 180 electric chainsaw, which is a bit lighter and slightly more powerful (15 amps). At the time of this writing, the Stihl isn't available on Amazon, so you'll have to search elsewhere for that. Rating: - * I am an occasional chainsaw user. For me this chainsaw has all the power I need to cut and prune my trees. It even tackled a very matured pine tree trunk after hurricane Catrina like a hot knife on butter. I carefully researched the pros and cons of gas versus electric saws and I have no regrets with this purchase and would highly recommend it for anyone wanting a medium duty electric chainsaw. Rating: - * This little saw is just what I was hoping it would be. Sturdy yet not too heavy. Very easy to access chain mount/removal...only one bolt! No need to feed oil as you go, that process is automatic. We cleaned up all the downed tree branches from the ice storm this winter...tons of old laurel and a couple good-sized apple limbs. The chain never slipped off like it used to on my old saw. Not for falling large trees, of course,but perfect for cleanup, limbing, bucking mid-size limbs into firewood, etc. Best cutting instructions I've ever seen. It does call for some kind of bio-fuel oil though, and none is included. Rating: - * Really good saw, cuts just about anything. I use it more than my gas powered saw. Rating: - * This works great and is sturdy. I bought a Pollen and it broke only a few hours after use. The Makita is worth the extra money. |
